within the first few months I had to have the porcelain grate replaced (do not use metal tools on it) and had to fight Char-broil to get it. It never got very hot so not useful in the winter. The latest is the cord melted or burned up. They want 60 bucks for a new one. Not going to happen. For the money this grill cost I expect it to last a lot longer than 2 years and actually work as advertised. I only wanted it to do simple things like hot dogs and hamburgers, oh well back to my trusty charcoal Weber kettle for those items.

I’ve owned this grill for 10 years. The Stores and Online shopping all favor propane grills, but Electric is far superior! This little electric grill does a great job. You can squeeze 8 chicken breast halves in easily. You’ll need the Grill-Tray for any slender items, shrimp, chicken tenders, or veggies, cause the grill slots are wide. 10 years good long time for the grill, but I have 30 year old Weber. In ten years, I have had to buy two new Elements and Controler/cords, cause, as the manual states, keep them out of the water or else. The two units oxidize and quickly corrode away. $85 to replace them which is 2/3′s the price a a whole unit.

The porcelain finish is quality and has lasted. The Grill is thick and quality, still in good shape. The reflective foil insulation bowls do reflect a lot of heat back inwards. They get a little tattered at the drain point, but don’t replace them as others have suggested here, that’s $110 and nuts. The motivation to replace them is cause you don’t want to clean them. Just spray them down with a $1 can of oven-cleaner from the dollar store and hit them with he pressure washer, every 3 seasons.

The unit comes with pumice coals to catch the drippings and season the meat, you can toss these after your 4th use, the reflective insulation bowls hold plenty of seasoning.

    Room for improvement

The lid handle does not mount tightly, but has lasted.

The temperature gauge is a joke, never worked, but it plugs the hole.

The grease cup is too small, and corrodes away.

The base of the BBQ should tapper more to drain away the grease faster.

The front handle has a foam wrap, that melts away with your first flare-up.

So when I tire of buying replacement parts, I look forward to the new model.

I’ve been reading the reviews on this bbq, and decided to write one up. I finally gave up mine this winter. I purchased it in spring of 2001 and have used it year round since then. My son and I totally cleaned it with a steam cleaner and elbow grease once in 2004, and if I had cleaned it again a year or 2 ago, I would still have it, but he moved away and I didn’t do it myself! As others have said, it cooks just about anything you want – it’s small, but for 2-5 people is big enough. I have actually crammed 3 chickens (cut up) on it! And, boy did they taste good! I gave this 5 stars because it definitely outlasted any gas bbq I’ve ever had, and worked better to boot. Now, there are a few items I wish were better. First, the little pan under the hole to catch grease always leaked and made the base pretty messy, which then dripped on my patio, so my son took a 3 lb. coffee can and drilled 3 holes to wire it tight to the bottom of the pan. I figured I would have to empty it out, but for 5 years it did the trick and I never had to empty it (it didn’t smell either, which rather surprised me). Second, I actually didn’t like the briquettes – they got so messy so quickly that I did have small fires when I was bbq’ing meat that had more fat. However, I didn’t worry too much, the fires went out when I closed the lid and actually flavored the meat nicely. Finally last summer I started to have more fires and bigger fires, to the point that I decided I had to clean the whole inside and get parts, or just start over. Since I had it for 9 years and it originally cost me about $100, I decided $11 per year was pretty good, and gave it up.

I’m trying to decide on the next bbq now, since spring is here and I’m antsy to grill again. CharBroil has come up with a new electric bbq, the Char Broil Patio Bistro Infrared Electric Grill, which is about $40 more then the original one, and I’m very tempted to get it – it’s 320 sq. in. instead of 187 sq. in, says “infrared”, and has 1750 watts of power instead of 1650. But, no one has reviewed it yet! Yikes, how can we purchase one without a review?

Anyone purchase the newer model yet? Sue

I love my Char-Broil Patio Caddie Electric Grill! This is my 2nd grill, the first one needs replacement parts (Heating element & Thermostat) when found, the cost is almost much as buying a new grill. I would love my grill much better if the replacement parts were more reasonable!

  5. Richard Millar says:

Had this grill for three years. It worked great until summer 2009. Thermostat burned and melted where it connects to broiler element. Char-broil customer service gladly sold me a new one – total with shipping $60.00. First time I plugged it in – which was 2 months after I received it – it melted and burned just like the first. Char-broil customer service wanted to sell me another since their parts only have a 30 day warranty. As a one time good deal customer service sent me a replacement with free return shipping of the newly burned out controller. This replacement of the replacement burned and melted just as the other two had done. However, now Char-broil won’t return phone calls and ignores my emails. No response to three emails and three phone calls. Don’t buy this Char-broil electric grill. It was a good product two years ago but the 2009 and later components are defective and cheap. Find a different brand. I am going to Weber grills.
